Governor Tutuba leads BoT participation in the IMF and World Bank Spring Meetings

Governor Emmanuel Tutuba led the participation of the Bank of Tanzania (BoT) in the Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, held from April 21 to 26, 2025, in Washington D.C., United States. The meetings, themed “Jobs: A Path to Prosperity,” brought together senior financial leaders from member countries to discuss global economic development, the challenges facing the international community, and opportunities for financial cooperation.

Governor Tutuba participated in the meetings alongside the Deputy Governor of BoT, Dr. Yamungu Kayandabila, as part of Tanzania’s official delegation led by the Minister for Finance, Hon. Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba (MP), who also serves as Tanzania’s Governor for the World Bank.

During the conference, Governor Tutuba attended key sessions involving financial institution leaders and private sector stakeholders. He highlighted Tanzania’s achievements in strengthening the financial system and the government’s initiatives to foster an inclusive economy driven by the use of financial technology (fintech). He also emphasized the need for international cooperation in lowering the cost of financial transactions and increasing access to formal financial services.

On the sidelines of the meetings, Governor Tutuba met with Mr. Andrew Torre, President of VISA for Central Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. They discussed strategies to reduce cash usage in Tanzania by promoting digital payment solutions. VISA affirmed its commitment to continue partnering with BoT through capacity building and the development of secure payment systems.

In addition, Governor Tutuba participated in the Meeting of African Ministers of Finance and Central Bank Governors held at the African Union Commission offices. The objective was to discuss unified African agendas to be presented at the 2025 G20 Summit, where South Africa serves as Chair. The meeting emphasized the importance of Africa speaking with one voice to influence global policy changes that would ease access to concessional loans and reduce the debt burden on developing countries.

In another key session, Governor Tutuba joined discussions between the Tanzanian delegation and Mr. Adran Ubisse, Executive Director for the IMF’s Africa Group One. The talks focused on the impact of U.S. policy changes on African countries, during which Tanzania reiterated its commitment to self-reliance through domestic resource mobilization, as outlined in the 2025/2026 national budget.

Governor Tutuba’s participation in these meetings demonstrated the Bank of Tanzania’s commitment to strengthening its presence on the global stage and contributing to discussions on financial policies aimed at promoting inclusive economic growth, addressing current challenges, and laying the foundation for sustainable development for all citizens.
