The Bank of Tanzania, as the custodian of Tanzania’s monetary and financial system plays an important role in ensuring economic prosperity and resilience, a foundation upon which National Security is built.
The BoT Deputy Governor (Economic and Financial Policies), Dr. Yamungu Kayandabila, said this in welcome remarks to a delegation of the National Defence College led by its Commandant, Ambassador Major General Wilbert Ibuge, staff and 53 members of the 12th course during their study visit at BoT in Dar es Salaam on 8th December 8, 2023.
“In today's ever-evolving geopolitical landscape, the role of central banks extends beyond traditional monetary functions. We, at the Bank of Tanzania understand the symbiotic relationship between economic stability and the overall national security of our beloved country,” he said.
He said a stable economy is not merely a fiscal goal; but also a key element of National Security.
During the visit, a presentation on ‘the “Role of the Bank of Tanzania in promoting national security’ was made by Dr. Deogratias Macha, Manager Research from the Directorate of the Economic Research and Policy, followed by a question-and-answer session.
Established in 2012, the National Defence College brings together selected senior government officials to have structured exposure to diverse issues related to National Security.
Speaking when introducing his delegation, the college Commandant Ambassador Major Gen. Ibuge, said of the 53 course members, 31 are from the Tanzania and 22 are senior officers from allied countries in Africa and Asia.
He said course participants have started learning a topic on economic issues with regard to national security and thought it imperative to visit the central bank. He thanked the Bank of Tanzania for hosting the NDC and expressed hope that the two institutions will continue to work together in future.
Also present was the Deputy Governor, Financial Stability and Deepening, Ms. Sauda Msemo, management and staff of the Bank.
The National Defence College conducts long-term and short-term courses related to national security issues.
