Graduates of the Bank of Tanzania (BoT) College who were awarded Ordinary Diploma in Banking Practise and Supervision and a Postgraduate Diploma in Bank Management have been urged to serve the nation with integrity and patriotism.
This call was made by the Governor of the Bank of Tanzania, Mr. Emmanuel Tutuba, who was the guest of honor at the second graduation ceremony of the BoT College held on November 17, 2023, in Mwanza. Governor Tutuba said that there is currently a problem of integrity and lack of patriotism than the problem of lack of education.
“There are some individuals in the financial sector who have been unprofessional and unethical, causing losses and reducing the efficiency of the financial sector, including the presence of non performing loans. I strongly urge you not to be among them and instead be exemplary,” he said.
Governor Tutuba stressed that the Central Bank continues to closely monitor all employees of the financial sector and will not hesitate to take appropriate action against those found to be involved in these unacceptable practices.
He also said that these graduates have a responsibility to be innovative, hardworking, and to use their skills and education appropriately to bring development to themselves, the surrounding community, and the nation as a whole. “The world today is competitive and requires innovative people. If you do not invent ways to solve the challenges of our people in the financial sector and elsewhere, your education may not help you much,” he said.
He also reminded the graduates that the issue of professional and technical development is very important in today’s world, as technology and knowledge change every day. This is caused by various factors including econ omic changes, scientific changes, population growth, and climate change.
“I encourage you that your graduation today should be a catalyst and the beginning of a new journey of learning and gaining new knowledge in various areas and levels,” said Governor Tutuba.
Governor Tutuba has asked the College to provide training and perform its duties at international standards to make it one of the leading colleges in the world and its programs should align with the current strategic needs in the Financial Sector by incorporating the use of technology.
“Despite the wide scope, I continue to emphasize that the College should continue to provide training in the areas of the Financial Sector only, the Bank of Tanzania is ready to support you to expand by providing training in various areas related to the improvement of the Financial Sector,” he stressed.
Governor Tutuba has instructed the College Board to look at ways of providing certification of proficiency in other areas such as Bureau de Change and Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies (SACCOS), in order to build capacity for workers in these areas.
Earlier, the Principal of the BoT College, Dr. Nicas Yabu, said that the statistics of students who graduated with an Ordinary Diploma in Banking Practice and Supervision last year 2022 show that out of 36 graduates, 21 graduates (58.3%) are continuing with university studies, 14 graduates (38.0%) have been employed and self-employed, and one graduate (2.7%) is still looking for a job.
"These statistics are a great success for us, something to be proud of. A significant percentage pursuing higher education is due to the solid preparation they received at our college," Dr. Yabu said.
In the graduation, twenty-six (26) graduates were awarded a Ordinary Diploma in Banking Practice and Supervision, of which, twelve (12) are men and fourteen (14) are women. Also, thirty-five (35) graduates were awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Banking Management, of which, thirteen (13) are men and twenty-two (22) are women.
