Bank of Tanzania Governor Emmanuel M. Tutuba joins other central bank Governors and finance ministers from 190 countries, parliamentarians, private sector leaders, representatives of civil society organizations, and academics at the 2023 Annual Meetings of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (WB /IMF), to be held 9. to 15 October 2023 in Marrakech, Morocco, to discuss issues of global importance, including the global economic outlook, poverty eradication, economic development, and aid effectiveness, among others.

Prior to the 2023 Annual Meeting WB /IMF, Governor Tutuba attended the combined forum of the Macroeconomic and Financial Management Institute of Eastern and Southern Africa (MEFMI) on October 8, 2023 in Marrakech, Morocco. The combined forum is an annual event specifically for ministers and permanent secretaries of ministries of finance and planning, as well as central bank governors of MEFMI's 14 member countries. This year’s combined forum focused on the topic of “Climate Change and Central Banking."

In his welcome remarks, Dr. Louis A. Kasekende, MEFMI Executive Director said, “Climate change is a sad reality that we face. In recent years, we have increasingly seen the effects of climate change destroy livelihoods and infrastructure and negatively impact economies around the world, including in the MEFMI region.”

On behalf of the Board of Governors, Management, and staff of MEFMI, Dr. Kasekende conveyed sincere condolences to the people of the Kingdom of Morocco on the devastating earthquake that recently struck the country. “We pray for the speedy recovery of the injured and wish the country all the best in rebuilding the damaged infrastructure”

Speaking at the 2023 MEFMI Combined Forum, Trade and Development Bank Group - TDB Group Senior Advisor, Reginald Max urged the delegates to seize the moment to redefine the role of central banks and finance ministries as stewards of our economic and environmental future

“As finance ministers and central bank governors, we bear a profound responsibility to protect and promote the economic well-being of our nations. Yet, in the face of climate change, our conventional roles must evolve”, he said.

He added that Africa has always been known for its resilience, and together, we can overcome the challenges posed by climate change.
